Next week one of our 4th Year Apprentices returns to college for a ‘Practice Week’ before undertaking her SVQ Level 3 Carpentry and Joinery Skills Test in May.
The Skills Test is a rigorous practical assessment taken at the end of a Four-Year Apprenticeship, designed to demonstrate that an Apprentice can work confidently to professional standards.
Here, Anna is practising a traditional joinery task: chiselling hinge housings into a test door.
The purpose of the test door is repetition — carefully chiselling a hinge housing every eight inches along its length.
It may look unusual, but the exercise has a clear purpose. Repetition develops the control and consistency required to achieve the clean, precise finish expected at industry standard.
Just like our solitary bees, patience and perseverance are key to a successful outcome.
Every hinge housing created, is another small step towards becoming a fully qualified craftsperson.
