Episode 46
The Appprentice And The Bee
2nd Year Apprentices – Traditional Pitched Roof with a Flat Roof Dormer

In their journey to mastering joinery, our Apprentices continue to develop skills that mirror the meticulous processes of our solitary bees – building with precision and purpose for sustainable growth and succession.

This stage of their training focuses on constructing a traditional pitched roof with a flat roof dormer, a task that sharpens their understanding of key terminology, techniques, and practices associated with trussed rafter construction.

In this photo, you can see the progress they’ve made – erecting, fixing, and bracing the trusses to meet a given specification, all while following their own working drawings.

At the base of each truss, they’ve created a ‘birdsmouth’ joint, a critical detail for securely connecting the roof trusses to the supporting wall plate.

Much like the bees in their cocoons preparing for their next stage, our apprentices are building strong foundations for a promising future.
