Episode 22:
The Appprentice And The Bee
Nest Building Techniques

Here’s an intriguing look into the nest-building techniques of our Red Mason bees (Osmia bicornis).

As solitary bees, they take on both the roles of queen and worker.

At the top, a bee is busy sealing her latest cell with a wet mud wall. Using the horns on her face, she skilfully shapes the mud.

Inside this cell lies a recently laid, transparent egg.

Quick sealing is crucial to protect her eggs from potential parasites that could take advantage of her hard work.

Meanwhile, our bee at the bottom appears more colourful, despite being the same species.

Reason being is that instead of mud, she carries yellow pollen on the underside of her body, which she brushes off into each cell.

Watch as she exits the flute and you’ll notice the yellow pollen has disappeared!

Stay tuned as our industrious bees continue their nest-building!
