Episode 87
The Appprentice And The Bee
Strength in the Details – The Haunched Mortice & Tenon Joint

As spring edges closer, our bees are nearing the end of their winter development. Every part of their structure — wings, muscles, and protective casing — plays a role in ensuring they emerge strong and ready for the season ahead.

Joinery is no different. Strength often lies in the details.

This week, our Apprentices tackle one of the most traditional and reliable joints in woodworking: the Haunched Mortice & Tenon Joint.

Used extensively in door and frame construction, its design prevents twisting, improves rigidity and provides long-term durability. The haunch – a small but important addition – ensures the joint stays true under load, reinforcing the connection where it matters most.

Producing this joint requires precise morticing, accurate tenon cutting and an understanding of how timber behaves.

It is a milestone in any Apprentice’s development, marking the transition from basic joints to structural joinery.

As with our bees, progress is built on solid foundations and well-crafted details.

Both emerge stronger because of the preparation that came before.
